Judges for the That Should Be a Mighty Wallet! Contest

I wanted to take the opportunity to thank our panel of distinguished judges for the 2nd “That Should be a Mighty Wallet” contest. All entries were judged based on the creativeness of the idea and the execution of the design.

It is always a challenge to judge other peoples creative work but this panel has a rich background in design as well as a strong understanding of trends and art. My personal thanks to them for their time and consideration of all of our entrants work.

Spring Ahead!

Today was the first day of Spring.

OK not technically but every year there is that one day where everybody is out and the first flowers are appearing, the temperature is warm and there is a tinge of excitement that grows in you because you know that from here on out the days are only going to get better and longer. I guess you’d call it the first day of the spirit of Spring. So today was that day and it was amazing with my daughters as radiant as the weather and the first seedlings of lavender that I’ve been trying to grow for the garden this year are finally peeking through.

So why would this day end with a mounting sensation of acid reflux and unidentifiable tension and anxiety? Because tomorrow is Monday! So far this year there is nothing easy about the first months of this year. Usually this time of year there is a relative lull that is a welcome reprieve from the January/February trade show season that follows right on the heals of the Holiday season.

This is (as I constantly remind myself) another indication of our rapid growth. I tell my employees that “Every 6 months we are different company” and more often than not I have to remind myself of that.

But why should it be such a challenging, stressful, grey hair forming behemoth? It should be fun right? It should be rewarding. I guess have to appreciate what I have more. I have to appreciate what a unique and incredible story Dynomighty is and take heart in the achievements we’ve made.

Its true that we will face many challenges as the Mighty Wallet gets more popular and we’ve already seen knock-offs that seem to be coming out of the wood work. This is a very anxiety producing feeling since I’ve seen other products I’ve designed be copied and exploited and there was nothing I could do but watch. That was a devastating experience and one I hope never to experience again.

I need to trust in myself and trust in the decisions and directions I’m going. Sometimes that’s hard not coming from a business background and at times second guessing my instincts. If Malcom Gladwell’s book “Blink” teaches us anything it’s that we have to learn to trust our intuitions and fine tune our ear to listen more to our heart and our gut.

In the past few weeks the sheer intensity of my schedule and work load has made me feel like the rock star in “The Wall” by Pink Floyd when he overdoses and is resuscitated just to be pushed back up on stage. It was even in one of my YouTube videos. I know, dramatic right? But I feel numb with the decisions and speed by which I have to perform. It’s incredible and I need to continue to work to find a balance.

Dynomighty is an amazing company with an amazing product and an amazing story. I need to remind myself of this and take hope in that we are creating something spectacular. Most of the time what really gets me through it is the amazing support and enthusiasm of our fans. Thanks for all your amazing emails, voicemails, Facebook and YouTube comments. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

I’ve said it before but it’s worth repeating, that it’s really cool to make a cool product that everyone loves and actually see people using them in the streets, on TV and it seems “everywhere”, but what really inspires me is knowing that the Dynomighty story is just as compelling and inspiring and that gives me the strength and peace to fight on.

TED Mighty Wallets

This year the TED Conference theme is Full Spectrum which incorporates the 5 senses and our human capacity and limitations at perceiving the world.

We were honored to participate at this years event by giving each of the attendees a one-of-a-kind TED Mighty Wallet that will not be produced or sold anywhere else. As one of the conditions of Thilo von Debschitz (who granted us the rights to reproduce these mechanical imaginations of Fritz Khan) these limited edition designs will never be produced for mass market.

TED is founded on the concept of “Ideas Worth Spreading” and so we thought, since the Mighty Wallet is such a conversation starter why not give out the Mighty Wallet to TED attendees to further spread the ideas learned at the conference. So each time an attendee gets asked “Hey, is that a wallet?”, or “Is that your wallet?”, or “How is that a wallet?” they have an instant segway into the TED Conference and an “Idea Worth Spreading” that they took from the conference.

We hope the work of Fritz Kahn will facilitate these conversations with his visionary illustrations of the human body. In each of the 5 TED Mighty Wallet designs one of the 5 senses is illustrated in complex mechanical operations that seem simple at first but quaintly hint at the deeper complexities of being human.

The rights to reproduce these illustrations were graciously given to us by Thilo and Uta von Debschitz, a bother and sister team who have extensively researched Kahn’s work and have provided a lexicon of his work under the title “Fritz Kahn – Man Machine / Maschine Mensch” by Uta von Debschitz und Thilo von Debschitz. More on the book is available here: http://www.fritz-kahn.com/

Dr. Fritz Kahn (1888-1968) was a world-famous popular science writer who illustrated the form and function of the human body with spectacular, modern man-machine analogies. Living in Berline in the 1920s, his magnum opus, “Das Leben des Menschen” (The Life of Man) – a five-volume series – was renowned as a German accomplishment of global repute. In the 1930s, his books were banned and burned by the Nazis, then edited by Kahn’s publisher and reissued as plagiarisms with a superimposed anti-Semitic chapter.

The Jewish intellectual was expelled from Germany, and settled in Palestine, later in France. He was eventually able to escape his pursuers, with personal help from Albert Einstein, by immigrating to the U.S., where he successfully continued his career as a bestselling author. He spent his final years in Danish exile and died in Ascona, Switzerland in 1968, when he was almost 80, after an extraordinary life and career.

We hope to hear the stories of the TED conference attendees of this year and I personally encourage them to share their stories of “Ideas Worth Spreading” by calling our Google Voicemail and leaving a message of inspiration for others. Call (917) 791-0145 and leave a message of what you love about the Mighty Wallet right now. I hope that these TED Mighty Wallets become a vehicle for communication, exchanging ideas and personal expression for many years to come.

Be Mighty!

TED Attendees can call us and leave a voicemail of their experiences with their Mighty Wallets so we can further those “Ideas worth sharing” to our audience of Mighty Fans.
